Amazon Admits Giving Ring Camera Footage to Police Without a Warrant or Consent

Amazon’s Ring camera subsidiary provided police with user footage without a warrant or consent 11 times in 2022 alone. In response to Senator Ed Markey’s questions, Ring stated that they reserve the right to supply police with footage in emergency situations involving imminent danger of death or serious physical injury. The company has declined to permanently agree to policy reforms proposed by Markey and did not provide details on the emergency requests or their approval process. Electronic Frontier Foundation policy analyst Matthew Guariglia expressed concern about warrantless access of Ring cameras and the risks of police abuse without meaningful oversight.
